My dog ate fabric toy pieces and threw up white foam. Is she okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 5 months and 9 days old | 43.3 lbs

Last night Mia tore pieces of her toy (made of fabric) off and ate them along with hairballs she found. Around 5:30 this morning she threw it all up in a white foam. She seemed fine immediately after and I fed her a small meal about 30 minutes ago and she still seems okay. I just wasn't sure if I should take her to the vet or if she just had an upset stomach?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! As you point out, this could be due to an upset stomach. Of course the concern would be a gastrointestinal obstruction from her eating pieces of her toy. At this point, if she has only vomited once, you may continue to monitor her closely to see if it is only going to be an isolated episode. Watch closely for signs associated with an obstruction such as nausea, vomiting, anorexia and abdominal pain. If observed, have her evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment at that point. Good luck and have a great day!

Since this happened a few days ago I wouldn't worry too much about it, especially since she is doing well right now. If you ever notice anything vomiting/diarrhea/lethargy/anorexia it is always recommended to have a veterinarian take a look at Vega. Right now I would just monitor her unless something changes. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
