My dog has inconsistent poop after bland diet. Will dry food help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Doberman Pinscher | Female | unspayed | 6 years and 4 months old | 70 lbs

My 6 year old dove had loose stools last week, the vet rec bland diet for a couple days. She didn’t poop for 3 days! Now her movements are small and begin consistent but loosened up at the end. What can I do? She is acting normal, not lethargic, she eats when I give her food, and drinks water, pees normally... I give her Merrick’s or Whole Earth Farms wet food with Taste of the Wild dry on a normal basis. Would only giving dry food help?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, switching to a dry diet can help. If no improvement after switching to a dry diet, you could consider adding a probiotic to her diet to see if that helps as sometimes that regulates the gastrointestinal system as sometimes there is an imbalance of the good gut bacteria. If no improvement, have her re-evaluated by your veterinarian to look for other reasons such as food allergies or sensitivity or intestinal malabsorption. Good luck!
