My dog had seizures, stopped breathing, and has a heart murmur. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 13 years and 10 months old | 14.5 lbs

My dog has had four heart seizures in the last eight hours. She has severe pain and she has stopped breathing and we gave her cpr the first time. We have given her massage in hopes of keeping her awake because the first three seizures happened when she was sleeping. We have given her benazepril and rimadyl. I am wondering if we did the right thing. She does have a heart murmur that is mild and has been present all of her life.

Poor Buffy! This sounds like it was really serious! I worry that her heart disease may have progressed and that she isn't receiving enough oxygen during these episodes. I think you did the right thing in this moment, but I think she may need to be rechecked by your vet. Your vet may want to check her chest x-rays to see if the heart disease has progressed. They may also decide to add in additional heart medicine or start anti-seizure medicine to help her out. I hope this helps!
