My dogs eat poop on a diet. Do they need vitamins or more food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 7 years and 6 months old

Eating Feces - 2 dogs = Jake=55lbs. Tasha=95 lbs. Feed them= Nutro-Lite(lamb & Rice). I read they eat Feces to re-gain Minerals in Stools. Remedy is to keep Stools picked up. Dogs are in a fenced-off 1-acre yard, so hard to find all the Stools. Winter here now = below freezing F. Lots of Snow, and Stools sink into Snow. Is there something I can give dogs to replace the Minerals? I think they are eating Stools, as both are on Diets. Should I feed them more, even though they may not lose weight?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! As you pointed out, they may be eating poop due to a deficiency of vitamins and minerals. Please remember that sometimes this is behavioral in nature. You can consider adding a multi-vitamin to their daily regimen. You may find these online or at your local pet store. If adding this, you would not have the need to feed them more which would likely result in weight gain. Good luck!
