Senior dog with seizures & dental issues: Euthanasia or surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 16 years old | 13 lbs

My Shizu is 15 years old and is scheduled to have all her teeth removed do to a bad infection. She has started to have seizures and on medication for them for about 6 months. I just want to know if we should Euthanize her or go through with the surgery and hope she lives a productive life. We are second guessing ourselves & don't want to be selfish & have her suffer.

It's difficult for me to weigh-in on such a difficult decision without having all of the medical records available and being able to thoroughly discuss this with you. I can say that the decision to euthanize is extremely difficult and there is no right or wrong answer. I advise my clients to consider euthanasia when they feel like their pet is suffering so much that they don't seem themselves anymore; or just don't seem to enjoy life anymore. You will be the best judge of this. I would not expect that the dental treatment to improve the recent seizure activity, so if she already seems to be suffering, then I would reconsider the dental treatment. I think it would also be best to discuss this with your vet (if you haven't already), because they we be much more informed about her condition and prognosis. I hope that helps and all goes well.
