My dog with anal gland cancer is shaking. How can I help his pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 12 years and 7 months old | 20 lbs

My dog has been shaking a lot. The shakes are full-bodied and are strongest when he exhales. The shakes happen for about half an hour 3 times a day. He doesn't seem to be in pain, just mild discomfort I'm concerned it might have to do with his anal gland cancer. I've ruled out him being cold or hungry. He doesn't seem to have any other symptoms. What is going on and how do I help him?

Shaking usually is a sign of pain. I would make sure his is on pain medication and that you are giving it regularly. He may have increased pain from the cancer when he defecates or if the cancer progresses. Talk to your veterinarian to make sure Rusty stays comfortable during this difficult time.
