Affordable dog food for sensitive skin: Iams, Purina One, or what?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 45 lbs

What dog food is better iams or purina one? I currently feed him purina one but it’s getting a little pricey and I’m thinking about switching to a new food. Also what other foods should I look into for him? He has sensitive skin issues.

Both are good foods. I personally feed my dogs Iams, so if you wanted to switch to that, it's fine to do. It's important to know when switching foods to do it slowly so that Scooby doesn't get any GI upset. Start by mixing 75% old food and 25% new food, and feeding that for a couple of days. Over the course of two weeks, gradually increase the amount of new food and decrease the amount of old food until he is eating the new food only. Other brands I recommend include Royal Canin and Hill's Science diet, but those would be pricier than the Purina One and Iams. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If he has sensitive skin issues, you could consider something like Science Diet z/d. However, this diet while good, it can be pricey. You could consider instead the Purina Pro Plan focus sensitive skin diet which is less expensive and still of very high quality. Good luck and have a blessed day!
