My dog ate trash but seems fine. Should I worry? What indoor games?

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 8 months old | 4 lbs

Bella was rummaging through trash and I'm really worried about her health. Her behaviour hasn't changed. She eats normally. Could something happen to Her? Should I do xrays and blood tests? Also could you recommend some indoor activities?

Bella could have been rummaging through the trash because she smelled something good in there. As long as her behavior hasn't changed and she isn't showing any symptoms such as vomiting, anorexia, or lethargy, I wouldn't be too worried about her. I would not do blood tests or x-rays unless you see those signs I mentioned above. There could be a risk of an obstruction or GI upset if she ate something like cooked bones or rotten food, but if she didn't eat anything, she will be fine. As for indoor activities, focus on training her. Teach her tricks such as sit, lay down, play dead, etc. She will love the one on one attention from you, and it will keep her busy. Would something happen to Bella after she was rummaging in trash and looking for food? I washed her whole face immediately and fed her her usual diet. I'm worried about her health.
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! If she ate something toxic (like grapes or onions) or something that could cause an obstruction (like a chicken bone), then she could get sick. If she just stuck her nose in and didn't come in contact with anything, then she will be ok. I would watch for any change in behavior, vomiting or diarrhea and take her to a vet if noted. Nova got her mouth into trash can, I removed stuff from her mouth. I don't know if she ingested something. Is there any signs I should look for, she is behaving normal, eating normal. Is there any way training her not to take everything in mouth.
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! If you aren't sure if she ate anything the best thing to do is to monitor her. Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy and not wanting to eat. Those symptoms can indicate that something is stuck or has caused an upset stomach. If this happens bring her to the Vet. I recommend making sure all trash cans have lids. Close all bathroom doors and put the trash cans up high on counters or tables. Start with basic training: "come" and "leave it" using treats. When you are not home crate her or lock her in a room that is free of things she could get in to. Hope this helps! Good luck!@

Dogs can eat really gross things from the trash! Keep an eye on Spotty, and if you see vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, or lethargy, then I would be concerned and have him seen by a vet right away. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

Thanks for visiting Boop by Petco. The fact that she is eating normal with no further vomiting is a good sign. Often-times when a pet eats something they should n't, the GI tract will slow down. This is called ileus. This is likely the reason she hasn't had a bowel movement yet. Continue to monitor her for the next few days to ensure she continues to have a good healthy appetite, no vomiting, and a bowel movement. I would only become concerned if she becomes lethargic, doesn't eat, vomits, and/or strains to poop but can't. Otherwise, she will likely be just fine. It's probably best to get a locking trashcan from here moving forward and to always have it secured before you leave, because dogs tend to not learn their lesson when ingesting things that make them sick. If you think he may have ingested bones, plastic, foil, etc then I suggest you get him to your vet for an exam right now. If he just ate food, then he may be fine or he may start having vomiting and/or diarrhea. There is no way for me to know what to tell you. My suggestion would be to monitor him. Give no food for 12 hours; having water available is fine. If he starts vomiting he needs to see the vet ASAP. If he has diarrhea it will likely resolve on it's own within a day or two. Diarrhea is not as concerning as vomiting. Vomiting can be an obstruction or pancreatitis, both of which can be serious. Hope this helps.

My dog got into the trash and potentially ate rotten / old / raw foods that had just been thrown out. Other items included dead roses. Do I need to take her into a vet office or will she vomit / poop and recover naturally?
Not necessarily--most dogs do just fine with occasional forays into the trash! Watch for excessive vomiting that lasts longer than 1-2 hours, and be advised that Lucy might develop diarrhea at any time as well. As long as she is bright, alert, eating, and acting like her normal self there is probably no need to take her to the clinic.

Other gastrointestinal signs like vomiting or diarrhoea are expected and more signs may show up. I would monitor him closely for the next 24hours and if you notice any sign or if the ones she is showing now are persisting, a check up would be required.

While this may cause them to have some GI upset (vomiting and diarrhea) there is nothing that is toxic to them. I would fast them for the next 12 hours or so, watch for vomiting, diarrhea and monitor their energy. If they are free of symptoms, then you can feed small amounts of their normal diet at first, then resume normal feeding. If at any time they do develop vomiting, diarrhea, poor appetite or decreased energy, I would take them to your veterinarian. Sometimes pets can get a more serious illness called pancreatitis after they get in the garbage. Some can also have a blockage in the stomach or intestines if they ate any of the packaging. Both of these require veterinary treatment.

Monitor her for the next 24 hours. Watch for lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite, straining to defecate or abdominal pain. If she goes beyond this with no symptoms, then she may be in the clear. If she develops any of the above symptoms, have her physically examined by your veterinarian. Pancreatitis or intestinal obstruction are real concerns after such a "meal".

Poor Bruno. Yes, I would be concerned, this trash visit could be causing his issues. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.
