How to prevent and treat dog yeast in muzzle folds on hot days?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Bulldog | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 1 month old | 70 lbs

Gus gets a dark yeasty buildup on hot days between the folds of his muzzle, and also gets tear staining on hot days, and extra earwax. in autumn and winter this goes and is manageable. We are currently haveling particular warm summer and the buildup is happening within the day and has lead to some discomfort and scratching, which in turn has caused some sores which we have treated. Is there anything you can recommend to prevent the yeast buildup. Can we use a canestan product? Or something else

If Gus has allergy issues and is pretty miserable with the itching, he should be on an anti inflammatory medication like Apoquel or steroids to help with the swelling and itching. Also antibiotics and sometimes topical or oral antifungals if the infection involves yeast. You have to keep the skin clean with an antifungal shampoo and/or wipes, like a shampoo with ketoconzole and wipes with ketoconazole. There are dozens of products on the market that help control yeast on dogs' skin. I have used Malaseb wipes to control infections between skin folds, but I have no idea what products are available in Australia. Good luck and hope that helps!
