My cat fell. What causes head tilt and balance issues after a fall?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 9 lbs

Could my cat have broken his neck? A week ago my 1 year old male presented strange symptoms. Loss of balance, head tilt to right, vomiting, excessive drooling and lethargy. He was rushed to the vet with suspected poisoning. After a week in hospital all bloods results were clear. We viewed camera footage and saw him jump down from a tree and minutes later show the symptoms mentioned. His eyes dilated fully and he seized on route to vet. He stool had the head tilt and unbalanced gait. Any ideas?

It is quite possible he has suffered a head or high spinal injury but a 'broken neck' is unlikely given the fact he is mobile and able to move. The clear blood results are positive and although an MRI or CT scan may provide additional information, if he is eating, mobile and able to toilet normally then rest and TLC may be enough to promote recovery. Hills make a specialist b/d diet may help with brain and neurological health and speed recovery, acupuncture may also be worth considering
