My dog has cancer, is frail, but still happy. When is it time?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 13 years old | 23 lbs

Rocco is 12 years old and was diagnosed with cancer last April. He has slowly wasted away and very frail and often can’t keep his food down. I’ve switched to feeding just rice and tuna which helped his digestion and he was able to keep down a little better. We knew that we would have to put him down soon as he has deteriorated but he still seems happy to be around us, playful, and excited to eat and drink. This morning though he hacked up a blood clot. At what point do we know?

Hello, I am so sorry for your concerns about Rocco. If he is still eating & drinking, & happy just to be with you, then you might try giving him some Pepcid to reduce stomach acid & hopefully help his appetite a bit more. A 23-pound dog would receive 5 mg every 12 hours. If any of his normal behaviors deteriorates further, or he begins to vomit regularly, then I think it will be time to say goodbye to your friend. He has put up a good fight, & we do not want him to suffer. You will know when the time is right. Take care & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
