My dog poops too quickly after eating new healthy weight food. Normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Bulldog | Male | neutered | 5 years and 6 months old | 40 lbs

We switched the dog food for our 2 dogs to Purina healthy weight. We noticed that when we take them outside right after they eat, they poop immediately, within 2 minutes tops. Stools look totally normal - no diarrhea. Is this good/normal/healthy for them? Before the food switch they would go regularly but it would take about 10-15 minutes. Also, a couple of times the bulldog went in the house which he never did before, as if he was not able to hold it.

Hi there, It sounds like the new food may be a little rich for your dogs. Urgency to defecate typically indicates some GI distress, so I would consider trying a different diet. For healthy weight I prefer the Royal Canin diets. They are typically very low calorie but easily to digest. Natural Balance also has some good healthy weight options. Best wishes and thanks for using Pet Coach!
