My active German Shepherd won't eat food, only treats. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered

I’m petsitting for a big, lovey German Shepherd. I’m supposed to feed him twice a day, but he barely seems interested in his food. His owners said he is a fincky eater, but I’ve tried all the tricks they told me and he still barely eats. He is energetic and playful, drinks fine and loves his treats just not his food. How concerned should I be?

Hermann is gorgeous! It's good that you are so on top of caring for him, but I don't think you have too much to worry about. As long as he is bright and active, and going to the toilet okay he is likely just being fussy. To be honest if he is getting treats then he is probably just holding out for those. I wouldn't worry too much about trying to change anything as ultimately this comes down to your friends. If he starts to be sick or gets dull at all then it may be worth having him examined by a vet.
