My cat's nail split. Will trimming it make the problem worse?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 3 years and 4 months old | 3.5 lbs

(Age and weight may be slightly off, he's not technically my cat, he belongs to my fiance) Loki was sitting next to me when he stretched and I noticed his nail.........split? Like it just broke apart. He got them trimmed along with his brother a month or so ago because they were getting too long. It didn't seem to bother him when I tried to look at it or when I held his paw to get the pictures but I'm worried that it could end up hurting him. Would getting it trimmed again make it worse?

Hi there, Yes, Loki does have a split nail. This can happen sometimes if they get their nail caught on something or they chew on their nail and split it. You can certainly have his nails trimmed again, this will trim the split and fix the problem. I hope that helps and thanks for using Pet Coach!
