My 7-month-old puppy was neutered. Should he stay on puppy food?

Most pets lose weight for an underlying reason that should be found out and treated for directly. In puppies that reason is often intestinal parasites, so I would suggest starting with a proper fecal exam through your vet. Most pets, even unneutered males, will still eat an appropriate amount of food, regardless of hormonal influence. At this weight, he should be eating around 2.5- 3 cups daily, and he should still be eating puppy food which is high in calories and ensures proper weight gain in an of itself. Some good food brands to consider for picky eaters are: Royal canin, Eukanuba, Victor, or Fromm. You just have to find a brand he likes. Appetite stimulants are only necessary for sick pets, and also arent' guaranteed to work on pets, especially ones that are just being picky. After neutering, generally at the age of 6 months, in Leo's case 8 months, cats are still growing not yet reached their full size till around 12 months of age. For now I would recommend to stick to a good quality kitten food till a year old. But, many young cats gain weight beyond what they should gain after neutering so watch him if he is gaining more weight then he should then talk to your vet about adult cat food, some are specific to castrated/spayed young cats.

I recommend to keep him on this food. Assuming he likes it, it is maintaining his weight well, I don't recommend to change anything. You can try any food that mentions weight loss. Most of them will simply instruct you to feed less food than you are currently feeding, so another option is to simply decrease his current food intake. If he gets 2 cups a day, then start with 1.5 cups per day for a month and see what weight loss occurs. If you don't see results with that plan, discuss a prescription weight loss food with your vet. They are higher in fiber to keep dogs full while still decreasing caloric intake.

You will need to transition the food over about a week so you will need a small supply of the current dog food the puppy is eating. Cooper should eat a large breed puppy food until he is at least 12 months old. Some veterinarians even recommend to feed them large breed puppy food until 15 months old but some of this does depend on the over all adult size. It somewhat depends on the breed and the size of the dog. A general rule of thumb is feed puppy food till they are about a-year-old, however giant breed dogs should be fed large breed puppy formula still there 18 months to two years old and smaller toy breed dogs may be able to be switched between 8 to 10 months of age. If pilot is a midsize mixed breed dog I would recommend keeping him on primarily a puppy formula until close to a year of age.

You can monitor his growth and weight and when he has reached maturity then you can switch him to an adult dog food. Probably between 12 and 16 months of age. Gradually switch him to the new food as diet change can cause gastric upset. Too much protein should not make him hyperactive.
