Should I rotate carbs like rice and potato in my dog's homemade food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 3 months old | 15 lbs

I am going to feed my dog with homemade food. ( so we can figure out what ingredients in her usual dog food she is allergic to) I was wondering what carbs she should eat and how often. Like should I switch between foods that contain rice and foods that contain potoato often? Or is it okay for her to eat food with rice daily?

If you are working with your veterinarian on creating an elimination diet, then you will likely be feeding Pepper only the agreed upon diet for the first 12 weeks without any changes to it. After that, you may introduce new foods one at a time at a specified frequency. If you are trying to create a balanced homemade diet that you will feed long term, then I would recommend consulting with a board certified veterinary nutritionist or use Balance It (http://www.balanceit.com/) to help formulate a balanced diet for Pepper. As far as your question, dogs seem to do well with rice or potato for a carbohydrate source and do not require rotation as long as it is a balanced diet. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and answered your questions. Thanks for using PetCoach.
