My dog's eyes have jelly strands. Is it eye worms or just debris?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 17 lbs

There are translucent jelly like strands on my dog's eyes visible periodically throughout the day. I am concerned it may be eye worms (Thelazia callipaeda). I brought him to the vet, but she did not know about eye worms and did not see anything in the exam. She thinks they are normal accumulations of debris in his eyes. I took photos of the eyes and am attaching them here for your opinion. (Please note I am asking about the worm like objects on the eye itself and not the debris on the fur)

Yes, I see what you are talking about in the pictures and can't tell you for sure what they are. Unfortunately, it is impossible to tell without some additional ophthalmology equipment and magnification. I would recommend consulting with a veterinary ophthalmologist. Eye worms are quite rare and most of us have not seen them before, so it would be worth consulting with an expert. You can find a veterinary ophthalmologist near you here. http://member.acvo.org/search_results Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using PetCoach.
