My dog has bitten people. How do I fix this? I don't want to give up on him because he's a sweet boy and he's only bitten people to protect me. I love him so much but how do I get him to stop acting aggressive with people

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The best thing is to have Rafiki seen by a Veterinary behaviorist. Biting people is serious and an unacceptable behavior. Depending on where you live and who he bites he could be reported as an "aggressive" dog and the SPCA monitors these animals. Be sure he is up to date on his rabies vaccine. In the meantime he should be walked outside with a basket muzzle and he should be crated or put in a separate room when people are over. And he should never be around children. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!

Please have Carl seen by a vet to help rule out a possible medical cause for his behaviour. In some cases your veterinarian may recommend medication that may help. If nothing is found to be physically wrong, seek the advice of a veterinary behaviorist to help curb this behavior. Visit the following link for more information on how to find a behaviourist https://avsab.org/resources/speakers-bureau/behavior-consultants-near-you/ . This is essential to help reduce the risk of him injuring you again, or injuring another person or another animal. Make sure to keep him on a leash and muzzled in public to reduce the risk of him biting anyone else, and keep him muzzled when you have other people or pets over at your house. Do not let him around other people or pets if he is in the habit of biting people, and makes sure hes is up to date on all vaccines he needs.
