Is my dog peeing in her crate and licking it up? Is it harmful?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 7 months and 20 days old | 31 lbs

How do I know if my dog is peeing in her crate while I'm at work (8-9 hours) and licking it up before I see the evidence? I don't leave blankets in her crate because whenever I leave anything down, she without a doubt pees on it. I limit her water intake in the morning. When I take her out when I get home, she pees outside and sometimes it's a lot and sometimes it's not much at all. If she is peeing and drinking it up, then is it harmful for her, also what can I do?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If she manages to lick up her urine, it will not harm her. There is really no way you can tell for sure other than setting up a video camera. This is likely a phase she will outgrow though. You can try spraying bitter apple to urine on the ground to try and deter her. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
