Is my dog in pain after spay surgery? She's restless and twitching.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Blue Heeler | Female | spayed | 6 years old | 58 lbs

My dog was spayed monday morning. We brought her home monday afternoon, and of course she was drowsy till the next morning. Since yesterday morning though, she keeps pacing, and hiding in tight places. She is breathing very fast, and seems restless. She is also twitching alot, almost spazing. When she walks, she is hunched up. I called the vet, and they said is could still be from the sedation. Is this really normal? Or do I need to take her to a different vet?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Daisy! Is Daisy on pain medications. She sounds painful to me. I would call and ask for pain medications or for additional pain medications. She should be on an anti-inflammatory (rimadyl, previcox and deramax) at a minimum. They can add tramadol and/or gabapentin. If you are worried and are not happy with how she is acting then definitely take her somewhere to be evaluated. They can check her temperature, her gums and her pain level. I hope this helps and I wish Daisy the best!
