My dog shakes in his sleep. Is it normal, and should I wake him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 10 years old

My dog was shaking violently in his sleep. I woke him up and he got some water. It stopped for now. This is the first time I have noticed this. What is it and how do I help him?

They can do this normally in their sleep and the fact that you were able to wake him up indicates that it was not a seizure. As long as he is otherwise acting normal when he is awake, this is not a concern. In the future, it's best not to wake them up when he is doing this in his sleep, because it can be very disorienting and disturbing for them to be woken up from this dream-like state. I hope that helps and all is well with Buddy.
