Is my German Shepherd puppy's fast breathing, twitching, and wet nose normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 30 lbs

Hi, is it normal for my German Shepherd puppy to breathe fast when they are sleeping? He is breathing pretty fast and when he awoke his nose was dripping water and then he fell asleep again. He also twitches in his sleep.

Yes, it is normal for them to breathe fast, twitch and even vocalize in their sleep. As long as he is normal when awake there is no concern. The nose can normally have a little watery discharge from time to time. If he starts to sneeze frequently or has mucous discharge, then this would indicate a problem like infection or allergies. I hope that helps and all is well with Haku.

Hello, puppies may have irregular breathing patterns or body movements while sleeping which is normal. We believe that dogs also dream in their sleep and this can affect their respirations and can cause them to jerk their body. I would be concerned if he had an increased respiratory rate and effort not only while sleeping but also when he is awake. Other signs of respiratory disease may include nasal discharge, coughing, sneezing, and producing phlegm. If you note any of these then have Ruger evaluated promptly. Otherwise, it sounds like he may be dreaming while sleeping. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Puppies do seem to have more dreams and jumpy behavior when they are sleeping than adult dogs. This can include bursts of rapid breathing, hiccups, twitches, whining/barking/vocalizing, movement of the feet as though running. As long as your dog can be woken from these episodes and is normal when awake, these are likely normal parts of puppy sleep. If the rapid breathing continues once awake, then this is of concern and an exam is needed.

As long as she is breathing normally and acting normally when she is awake oh, I would not be too concerned. Puppies can have dreams and can breathe faster and move their legs while sleeping. This usually does not indicate a health problem and is more a sign that they are in a deep sleep. I hope this helps!
