My dog licked Advil. Is ibuprofen toxic? He's acting unwell.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | neutered | 30 lbs

My dog licked the outer coating off of 2 Advil’s but left the white part alone. Will he be okay? He isn’t acting fine right now.

The active ingredient in Advil is ibuprofen. Ibuprofen is toxic as low as about 50 mg/kg. For a 30 pound dog, that is about 700 mg of ibuprofen or about 3 regular strength tablets. It does not sound like Roley could have ingested that much ibuprofen, but if they are extra strength tablets those are 600 mg, so he would only have to eat 1 to potentially have some toxic side effects. If you have any question about how much he may have ingested, I would certainly recommend contacting your veterinarian for a recommendation. Regardless of how much Roley may have ingested, if he does not seem to feel well, does not want to eat or vomits, I would recommend having your vet see him right away. I have attached a handout on ibuprofen toxicity which includes the phone number for ASPCA Poison Control. https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=3342 Good luck! I hope that was helpful and that Roley will be fine. Thanks for using PetCoach.

Thank you for your question. The ASPCA poison control lists the following toxic ranges for ibuprofen in dogs: 25–125 mg/kg Vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, anorexia > 175 mg/kg All of the above plus hematemesis, melena, polyuria or polydipsia, oliguria, uremia, acute renal failure > 400 mg/kg All of the above plus seizures, ataxia, coma, shock > 600 mg/kg Death So for death, a dog would have to ingest 600mg of ibuprofen PER kg of their own body weight. So a 600mg ibuprofen tablet would be very toxic to a dog who weighed 1 kg but not to a dog who weighed 50 kg. If a 20 lb dog ingested a 600 mg ibuprofen, you are correct this would be a 66 mg per kg ingestion and could result in some gastrointestinal signs.

Hi there and thanks for posting. Ibuprofen has a narrow margin of safety in dogs and cats. Based on Sadie's weight, she may have received 18mg/kg which is below the toxic dosage in dogs. However, dogs can be very sensitive to this drug, even at small dosages. Sometimes onset of symptoms can be immediate (1-4 hours after ingestion) or can be be delayed for a day or two. It depends on the pet and how much was consumed. Please keep an eye out for vomiting, diarrhea, blood in the vomit, increased urination, increased thirst or any other behavioral change and take Sadie to an emergency veterinary clinic if you see any of the above signs. If you are still concerned and need further guidance, please contact the Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661. I hope this helps and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

acute overdoses as low as 25 mg/kg can cause vomiting in dogs, which is approximately the amount Gracie took, i would recommend contacting the poison helpline in order make sure she is not suffering from any toxic reaction 855-764-7661
