Is a second puppy a good idea for my 6-month-old dog home alone?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 5 months and 29 days old | 35 lbs

Me and my boyfriend have lexi who is 6 months. We want to adopt another puppy from the same rescue we got lexi. That puppy would be about 2/3 months. We spend about 8/9 hours a day away during the week. Weekend we spend all the time we can. But we were thinking maybe adopting another puppy can give lexi entertainment when we aren’t home. We don’t want lexi to feel like she’s betrayed or in competition with the new puppy. We don’t know if we should or not. We dont want to if it’ll upset lexi

This would likely be a great idea! Most puppies get along with other puppies. If you have friends with other friendly dogs, you may try to see how she does around them first. Once you find a dog you want to adopt, you may ask the rescue if you can do a meet and greet and see if they get along before adopting the new dog. Also, if you do adopt a new dog, I would not leave them alone without supervision for a little while until you are confident that they will get along. I would also not feed them together or give them bones as this can increase the competition feeling. I hope this helps!
