My cat has a scab near his private parts. When should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 11 years and 7 months old | 12 lbs

I thought my cat had a clump of fur on his behind next to his private parts, and he has been meowing more than normal, so I thought it might have been causing him pain, and attempted to get rid of it. Initially I believed it to be a bit of feces, but it wasn't cleaned up for a couple days, so I tried to help him and it turned out to be a scab. I believe he may have scratched himself, and even though it doesn't look serious, I wanted to ask if I should see a vet in person because of the location

Hi there. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. So sorry the Sushi is having this issue. It is very hard to tell from the photo exactly what is going on. What I think I can see is that the area is not overly red or swollen. If that is the case and he is eating and drinking and acting normally I would not be concerned at this point. I would only be worried if the area gets swollen or if he starts to feel sick (not eating, extreme lethargy, vomiting, etc). You are welcome to apply a thin layer of Neosporin to that area twice a day until healed. If not real resolution of the this wound after a week then I would say he needs to see your vet. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
