What dry and wet food is recommended for my 8-month-old kitten?

The answer is up to you and your cat. Some cats prefer dry only, some wet only, some enjoy both. Kitten food is still needed at six months of age and will be until he is a year old. Cats are carnivores, and canned, pate-type wet food is the closest to what they would get in the wild. Dry food has to have some carbohydrates in the form of grains or vegetable pulp in order to be made into dry nuggets. Cats have a very low carbohydrate requirement and some gain excess weight on dry food. Feed the best food you can afford. My personal favorites are Science Diet and Royal Canin. Both offer excellent quality, specifically formulated diets that are nutritionally complete for your pet's life stage and condition and both offer money-back guarantees if your pet doesn't like them. Just make sure when switching to a new food to introduce it gradually. By 8 weeks old, you can absolutely start to give your kitten dry food. If they are accustomed to eating wet food, consider making the transition gradually by mixing the wet and dry foods together over 5-7 days. While it would not necessarily be harmful to eat small amounts of an adult cat food, it would be best to exclusively feed kitten food for the first year of life since these foods are balanced for growth. Purina is a great brand of food, I would definitely keep her on that, and switch her to an adult dry food when she is a year old. I would give him wet food for a little longer. He is only 3 months old and may not be able to chew the food enough with how small he is. I would still leave dry food available but if a month he will hopefully take to the dry food and you can start removing the wet food. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

Hi there and thanks for posting on Boop by Petco! Kittens should be on kitten food primarily until they are 9 months to a year of age. There are differences in the nutritional content of these foods. The kitten formula has higher protein, calcium, vitamin D and E to help support health growth then the Savor does. I would recommend your kitten continues to eat the kitten formula until 9 months to a year old and then you can transition him back to the Savor or another adult formula. I hope this helps!

In general, I stick with the bigger name brands because they are formulated by veterinary nutritionists. These include Purina, Hills Science Diet, Eukanuba, Royal Canin etc. Choose something that says “kitten” or “all life stages” until about 9 months, then transition to adult formula. I don’t have a preference on dry or wet so whichever you and Ginger prefer. I always also tell people that if finances are a concern, mixing half high-quality and half low-quality is perfectly acceptable. As for amount, approximately 1/4-1/3 cup or 1 -1.5 can per day (split up into two or three meals ideally). This will of course increase as he grows. Best wishes to you and Ginger!

Hello. It makes a bit of a difference if your kitten is 4 weeks or 8 weeks of age. At 4 weeks, you can offer food 4 times a day & allow the kitten to eat as much as she wants in a 10-15 minute period of time. At 8 weeks of age, you can leave dry food out all day as most cats do like to nibble throughout the day. You can absolutely mix the dry & the formula together but by 8 weeks of age, I would stop the formula & just use the dry food. Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. At 9 months old, if spayed/neutered, they should be eating adult food. Kitten food has A LOT of calories and they will get overweight very quickly eating that. It has nothing to do with cost. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
