My (very old) rat suddenly developed a bump on his stomach. I thought it was a hernia, but after feeling it I am not sure. It is red, hard, and feels rough. It is also oval-shaped, about the length of a quarter, and sticks out from his stomach slightly. It does not seem to be bothering him a lot, as he's still eating/drinking/moving/peeing/pooping normally, but he is laying on his side more often.

Unfortunately, senior rats are predisposed to developing malignancies late rin life. To confirm this, you will need to have Dobby examined by your veterinarian. A fine needle aspirate can be done in the clinic to collect samples for pathology. Once results are returned, you can discuss treatment options with your vet. Monitor for bleeding, ulceration, odor, lethargy or decreased appetite. Keep him on paper towels and change them daily or as needed to keep the area clean and dry.

This lump/bump/growth should be ideally examined by your local vet to have a diagnosis established. Your vet may want to perform an FNA (fine needle aspiration) or a biopsy to sample the bump and determine its underlying nature. Differentials would include skin cysts, infections, benign or more malignant type of tumors.
