Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Staffordshire Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 10 years and 6 months old | 20 lbs

Hi, my dog has scratched his genitils so bad that it’s gone red raw. His had prostate cancer in the past so I’m wondering if that could be it coming back?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is not likely to be due to his previous history of prostate cancer. I work with this cancer type very frequently and that would not be a usual sign of this cancer. He may be doing that due to allergies. I recommend you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may recommend medications for the skin irritation. In the meantime, you can use an e-collar to prevent further self-trauma. Good luck and have a good night!
