German Shepherds are naturally quite lean, but visible ribs may indicate that he has a medical problem. Difficulty passing stool can be due to a range of different problems including firm feces, enlarged prostate, or defect in the colon. Considering he has this problem and seems to be too thin, I recommend you schedule him for an exam by a veterinarian. The vet will be able to tell if he is too thin and what the possible causes are of this and the difficulty passing stool. I hope that helps and Murphy gets better soon.
