Dog swallowed a bone. Why is she coughing, gagging, or gurgling?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Female | spayed | 26 lbs

This morning my Dog tried swallowing a rib bone whole. She quickly vomited it back up including the contents of the bone she ate. Periodically through out the day she has coughed or gagged a little. Nothing else has come up. Her bark was a little hoarse but not now. She has a little gurgle when she breathes out deeply. She is not behaving any differently and seems fine otherwise.

It sounds like she likely has some damage to her throat/esophagus from the bone. This sounds minor and will likely heal quickly, but I would have to examine her to know for sure. For now, it's fine to wait and feed soft food for the next couple of days. You can soften dry food by just adding a little water and waiting a couple of minutes. If she is not getting better, or is getting worse in the next 2-3 days, then it's best to have a vet evaluate her. I hope that helps and Stella gets better soon.
