Australian Shepherd scratching raw neck spots. Vet or home treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | neutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 45 lbs

We recently adopted a 15 month old Australian Shepard. He’s very healthy generally, but has developed an itch that he keeps scratching at that has become aggravated and raw. It’s on his beck just below the collar and he has one on each side. Is there a salve I can get for this? Or is this a required trip to the vet. The one on the right side is getting better (scabbing up) but the one on the left is Not as he continues to scratch at it. Thanks. Dave

Hi Dave. In one of the pictures it looks like Dodger has some crust on the area. If there is some crust then I am worried that there is an infection. You can bathe him in an antimicrobial shampoo such as chlorhexidine or salicylic acid which can be found in the human shampoo aisle in the dandruff area. However, if it doesn’t start to look better soon, then I would recommend that he be evaluated by your veterinarian. With him recently being adopted I would also test for mites. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.
