Great question! That depends on the essential oil. Ones that are high in phenol and hydrocarbons are not safe to use around cats. This is a good question. Cats are very sensitive to essential oils, and you are correct that some oils can be toxic. Their sense of smell is so much more acute than humans, so even diffusing diluted oils can be very unpleasant for them. I suggest do not use a diffuser, instead if you'd like to use or smell oils, apply them to your skin or a tissue to sniff. Do not apply any oils to your cats fur.

Unfortunately essential oils can be a problem with cats. I'm attaching a link to a website that was written by a veterinary toxicologist about essential oils below which does a great job discussing the risks with essential oils. http://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/blog/essential-oils-cats/ There are some essential oils that we know are a problem in cats (including citrus oils), but potentially any oil may be a problem. The concern with a diffuser is that the oils are aerosolized and can end up on the cat's fur which they may then lick off or get absorbed through the skin. If you want to use essential oils, the safest way seems to be to put a few drops on a cotton ball, then put the cotton balls in a box with holes in it. Hi, Maura. That is a tricky question to answer because there haven't been any studies on essential oils and cats. Some cats are very sensitive to scents and can develop asthma (even some plug-in diffusers can cause issues in cats). Some essential oils are toxic in cats. With cats- non of the essential oils are safe, you just can't use essential oils around cats without taking a huge risk of causing them liver damage. in dogs most essential oils are actually ok to use, the ones to avoid include tea tree, cinnamon, citrus, pennyroyal, pine, sweet birch, wintergreen, and ylang ylang.

Are essential oils safe for pets to be diffused?
Hello, and thank you for using Boop by Petco. Our pets are very sensitive to the chemicals in essential oils (think how much more sensitive their sense of smell is!), and exposure to diffused essential oils can be dangerous. Cats are particularly sensitive, but it's best to avoid diffusing oils around dogs as well. If you must use diffused oils, do so in an enclosed room and keep the pets out to minimize their exposure. Hi there! I recently bought an essential oil diffuser. I've used it twice with diluted oils (4 drops in 300ml of water) but now have read that EOs can't even be diffused around cats because of the risk of liver toxicity. I'd love a vet's take on this
I definitely would not use the essential oils around your cats. There are many that are toxic to cats, even when they are inhaled, so it's best to avoid it completely for the health of your cats. I hope this helps!

This is a wonderful question and yes they can be safe but not all oils are created equal and cats can be quite sensitive. I would strongly recommend you to research the oils made by vet. You can visit oilyvet.com There is also a company called doterra who also has essential oils safe for animals. You can call them and discuss which ones would be best. I hope this helps!

Hello. For the most part, these diffusers are safe for cats, as long as there are regular air exchanges & some fresh air coming in all day. Most HVAC systems have automatic air exchanges, but if the weather is good, keeping a window cracked a bit is perfect. Some cats are very sensitive to odors, some do not care for them at all, so as long as the cats are not confined to a closed in room & can move to a different area, there is no harm in essential oils. One caveat, we have a diffuser mounted on a wall in our clinic & it malfunctioned ( exploded ) sending the contents all over a hallway. Fortunately, none of the office cats seemed to have walked through this, but that would be a concern if a cat ingests any of this. But otherwise, I would just enjoy the fragrance of your choice.
