My dog has a CCL tear. What can I do for her painful rear leg?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 5 years and 5 months old

Had vet appt few days ago, my 6 yr old 80 lb pit mix was diagnosed with CCL tear. She's currently receiving NSAIDS and tramadol, on bed rest. She still won't apply weight to left rear leg. Only getting up for potty breaks. Do you have any other recommendations to help with rear leg discomfort until we follow up with vet/orthopedist? Can we wrap leg up or use temporary brace. Thank you.

I’m a Rehab veterinarian and have found braces and wraps do not stabilize the knee. Leash walk only for potty breaks like you are doing is all you want to do physically. Please give the medication as directed. If there is a rehab facility in your area they can help you with laser treatments for pain and some conservative exercise. If she does too much activity on the other rear leg that CCL can tear also. Surgery is indicated in a dog of that size and age.
