Why is my dog panting after hot spot medication? Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Husky | Female | spayed | 56 lbs

My dog has been silent panting. She also has developed a hot spot. I took her to the vet a week ago and they gave her medication to treat the hotspot. It is slowly going away but the panting is continuing. Any ideas?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Storm! I wonder if the medications Storm was put on for the hot spot are causing the panting. Steroids are commonly prescribed for hot spots because it reduces the inflammation, itch and dries them out. Prednisone definitely makes dogs pant! If Storm is on steroids then the panting should resolve as the steroids are tapered. I hope this helps!
