Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 8 months and 18 days old | 7 lbs
My dog is 8 months old, a shih tzu and her ALT is 592, she throws up now and then. is on denimarin now, she will have her blood woek checked in 4 weeks to see how it is. If it is a minor liver shunt, she weighes only 7pounds, can she live a normal life with medication and diet.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Holly! I would consider doing a bile acid test if her ALT is still elevated at the recheck. That can help with the diagnosis of a liver shunt. Yes, dogs can live a relatively normal life if the symptoms of the liver shunt can be managed with diet, antibiotics and laxatives. That is if she is even experiencing hepatic encephalopathy signs. I hope this help and I wish Holly the very best!
