My dog is shy with family. How can I help him feel more at ease?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year old | 12 lbs

Shy dog or so the breeder says. He doesn't like anyone except me. Get along with the other dogs. Very sweet dog but I want him to feel at ease with the other family members. I was told he wasn't an abused dog.

Blu may just be shy and this may be his personality. I would see what Blu likes most. This could be a treat, going for a walk or even throwing the ball. Then I would have the family members that Blu is shy with do these things with him. Hopefully this will help him not be so shy around them. I would make sure you are not around when they do things with Blu. If this does not work then I would talk to a trainer to work with the family member that he is shy with and him. This may just be him but hopefully you can work with him to make him feel more at ease with other family members. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
