Dog leaking yellow smelly fluid in bed: Is it anal glands or marking?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog has been releasing his glands. Only at night, in bed. Just a small yellow dot surrounded by moisture that smells awful, like pennies. We had him expressed nand everything was normal. what could be causing the release? Is there anyway he could be trying to mark my bed as his territory?

Hi there. I do not think he is marking your bed. When dog's mark their territory usually it is the from of urine and not anal glands. How are you expressing the glands? From the outside of the anus or internally? Are you doing it yourself or do you have a groomer or someone doing it for you? If the glands are not being expressing internally then this may be part of the issue as expressing them externally is often not effective. Also, it sounds like the glands are infected - the "fluid" should be grey and not yellow. So, I recommend you get him to your vet to have the glands expressed (internally) and to get some antibiotics prescribed to clear the infection. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
