Why is my dog throwing up poop and having diarrhea? What's happening?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 4 years and 5 months old | 15 lbs

I woke up to my 4-year old terrier mix havinh vomited 3 times what looked like feces. I cleaned her up and gave her water. Then 5 minutes later she had a small bout of diarrhea and vomited the water. Now her vomit is yellow and mucousy as shoen in the picture. She seems calm now, but is not herself. What's happening?!

This is not specific to any one disease, but does indicate that something is irritating the stomach, and/or making her feel nauseous. This could happen if she ate anything different this evening, or ate something that was toxic. Other possibilities include pancreatitis, liver disease and infections. Without being able to examine her and do some testing, it's difficult to tell the cause of this, or how serious it is. It makes sense that she would act somewhat off, but if she seems severely depressed, then it would be best to get her to a vet as soon as possible. Sometimes they have a bout of vomiting and diarrhea and are better the next morning. For more information about this, I reccomend you read the article at the link below. https://www.petcoach.co/article/diarrhea-vomiting-in-dogs-when-to-call-your-veterinarian If you have further questions, you may consider requesting a consult with one of our vets on Petcoach. I hope that helps and Nala gets better soon.

It seems as Nala is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.
