My senior dog's ear wart is growing. Does it need surgery if it looks like it's dying?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Two weeks ago my 11 yr old pit bull got a small bump on his ear flap. We took him to our vet and she says she’s pretty sure it’s a wart. Because of the location of it, he needs surgery to remove it. He’s scheduled to go in for the surgery this Monday morning. But in the last two weeks it has almost doubled in size and looks like it might be dying. I don’t want him to be “put under” at age 11 if the wart is dying on its own. Do you think it looks like a dying wart??

Poor pup! No, I don't think that this looks likely to fall off on its own. In fact, since it has doubled in size and is also open and oozing now, I would consider it even more important to have it surgically removed. It would also be best to have this mass sent off for histopathology to find out if it is cancerous or not, especially given its recent rapid growth.
