Why is my 10-year-old dog losing hair? Cushing's or Hypothyroidism?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rough Collie | Male | 10 years and 9 months old | 22 lbs

10 yr old Rough Collie Hair loss on tail Skin on upper leg was pink & now black after orthopaedic surgery Doesn't seem to have excessive thirst so I question if Cushings hair thinning on chest. Could it be early Cushings or Hypothyroidism? He has shown these symptons for over 1 yr. Vets took bloods for Ortho op in August 2017 and all was fine but Ive not mentioned my worry of Cushings or Hypothyroidism yet.

Poor Louis! This type of hair loss can be caused by cushings and hypothyroidism among other things like allergies, bacterial or yeast infections and more. Keep in mind that both Cushings and hypothyroidism dogs usually show other signs as well, but not always. Dogs with cushings usually with have excessive drinking and urinating and/or excessive panting. Dogs with hypothyroidism are usually over weight and/or always lethargic. Cushing's and hypothyroidism both require specialized blood testing to diagnose so they were likely not tested for back in August of 2017. I would talk with your vet about your concerns and see if they feel like you need to run any additional diagnostics or if they think there is another cause. I hope this helps!
