My dachshund has a sore under her eye. Should I worry or use OTC?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Female | spayed | 10 years and 3 months old | 13 lbs

My mini long haired dachshund had a sore right under her left eye. Is this something I should be worried about or is there something I can get over the counter?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! From your pictures I can't tell if those are scabs or skin growths. I would use a wet paper towel and wipe the area, if she will let you. If they are scabs I would remove them and then apply a thin layer of a triple antibiotic ointment, being careful NOT to get it in the eye. If they are not scabs and are growths, Missy should have it evaluated by a Vet. I hope this helps and I wish Missy the best!

Hello. Missy has an abscess originating from the root of her 4th premolar ( Carnassial tooth ). She will need to be placed on antibiotics, & the tooth possibly removed. This is a fairly common problem, especially with small breed dogs. Just clean the area with warm water several times a day until you can have her seen by your veterinarian. Thee heal very quickly once treatment is started. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
