Why is my old dog pacing at night and having accidents indoors?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 13 years and 11 months old

My baby is a rescue dog with me 5 years. Had all his teeth out last month. Since then he has zoned out and I.have to remind him to eat etc. Had 1 or 2 accidents in-house as he has forgotten his routine. He paces incessantly into the night & neither he nor I get much sleep. I massage him to try & relax him & sometimes it works. I dread going to bed knowing that I will probability have to open the door about 10 times in case he needs to pee/poo. He is on vivitonin 5mg twice daily. Ideas?

Hello, I am so sorry for your concerns about Dylan. It sounds like he has developed some issues concerning canine cognitive dysfunction, a type of dementia often seen in dogs this age. There are several options for trying to help Dylan & you rest easier at night. Some are prescription medications, some may be available over the counter. Please talk to your veterinarian about what would be most appropriate for helping Dylan. I am sure something can be found to settle his night wanderings. Take care & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
