My senior dog with dementia won't sleep at night. What can I give?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 16 years and 6 months old | 11 lbs

My 16 year old Yorkshire terrier won't sleep all night. Wakening multiple times. Had health check but no obvious reason. Mild dementia diagnosed. Is there anything I can give to help her sleep at night.

With canine cognitive dysfunction (dimentia) night waking is really common. I have used an anti anxiety medication called alprazolam with varied success. Also melatonin can be helpful. It seems some patients respond nicely, while it doesn’t seem to affect others at all. However, it is worth a try. I would recommend calling your veterinarian and discussing if a prescription for these would be ok for Kimi. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
