Why does my 4-month Doberman puppy have a hard lump on his back?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Doberman Pinscher | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 7 days old | 90 lbs

My Doberman puppy is 4 1/2 months old and I just noticed he has a lump in the middle of his back on his spine. Is this normal? It doesn’t seem to bother him when I touch it. It feels like a hard mass. I have attached pictures. Please let me know what this could be.

Hi there. I’m sorry Duke has this going on. Being a young puppy this could be a hematoma (or bruise) From rough play. It could also be an abscess from poking his skin on something such as a rosebush. Of course there could be other odd problems and concerning growths. But those are all unlikely. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Best of luck and I hope he is back to normal soon. Thank you for using Pet Couch.
