What's wrong? My young cat is suddenly whimpering and skittish.

My young cat has suddenly started acting very different. She has always been social and playful and the past week or so she has been acting weird, like she was going into heat (but in the air and mouthy) but now she has stopped that and is whimpering a lot and very skittish. Wont even let me hold her like she normally does. What could cause this?

It could be that Rowena isn't feeling well, which could account for the sudden change in behavior. When cats are sick, they can have changes in behavior and personality. It could also be that she is in heat. Given that she is acting differently from normal, I'd recommend a visit to the vet for her. The vet can diagnose what is causing the change in her behavior, and what treatment (if any) is needed. I would take her into the vet this weekend if possible. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your cat. I would recommend a trip to the veterinarian to ensure she is not suffering a medical problem causing this behavior change. A disease known as hyperthyroidism can cause increased vocalizations in a cat. It is usually accompanied an increase in thirst and urination, hyperactivity, possibly vomiting/ diarrhea and weight loss. She will likely have blood work performed to rule out this as well as other internal diseases. If she is found to be healthy, then you can discuss behavioral modifications at home. Poor girl! There could be something that has spooked her. Or she could be not feeling well. Or there could even be an internal conflict with another cat in the household. The first thing I would do is make sure she is healthy. I would see if your vet can look at her and make sure she isn’t painful, no infection, no fever, no urinary tract infection, etc. if she isn’t feeling well, this definitely can cause a change in behavior. If everything is normal then I would make sure she is getting along with everyone in the house. Make sure there are plenty of litter boxes as this is something they commonly will become territorial over. You can even put out some feliway diffusers which are pheromones they help calm down cats. Unfortunately these don’t work on everyone. You make also look into vetriscience composure treats as a natural calming supplement. I hope this helps!

As with any sudden behavioral change, an exam to rule out any health issues is always the best first option. If the weather is changing rapidly and you are seeing her seek out warmer spots such as blankets, by heater vents, etc that could also be related to the behavior. Adding a warm blanket out of the dryer to her bed, or providing a place for her to sleep near a heater may help. However, if you are concerned enough about the change, a vet exam for a bit of peace of mind is always good.

A sudden change in behavior from the normal can be a sign of illness in a cat. Given that Ava is acting very differently from the way she was before, I'd take her into a vet today for a health check. Best of luck.

Cat bite wounds are common and could explain her abrupt change in behavior. If she is not acting normal by the time you return home today, then she will need to see her veterinarian. If she does have a wound (and they can be hard to find), she will require treatment. I hope this information helps!

Unfortunately, it's hard to know if this is pathological or if she is in heat? I recommend to look up information on heat cycles and watch videos. Also record the behavior on video. If this is not a heat cycle or if you are unsure if it is, I recommend to have her examined and have the doctor watch the video. The vet will palpate her spine and may check her urine for infection to look for a medical cause. Hi, I hope Bonnie and Scarlet are doing well. heat cycles can cause some abnormal behavior in cats, so this may be it. As long as they are eating and drinking and using the litter box well, I don't see a medical emergency. Bedbugs can move to animals but usually don't cause a problem. I would examine them both for signs of bugs or red spots and treat with a medication called revolution you can get from your vet. The weather may be another factor. If it is unusually warm out, they may be just laying around and not very active. I would monitor them both carefully for signs of not eating or not using the litter box properly and if you do see that, take them to a vet. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Yes, all these signs are not normal at all. These are general signs of disease, unfortunately almost any disease can manifest itself with those symptoms and for this reason I won't be able to give you an idea of what could be causing this. I would recommend taking your cat to the vet ASAP for a physical examination, if nothing obvious is found she will probably need a blood test or an ultrasound and the vet will then treat him according to the results.

Sudden strange behavior changes can sometimes indicate underlying pain or illness, so it is a good idea to schedule a checkup with your vet to rule out any health issues. If your cat is not spayed and is also leaving the house, it could be that she is in heat or is pregnant, which is why she is trying to separate from her old litter (I assume this is what you mean by her kids) to make ready for a new one. Having her spayed and keeping her indoors may help if this is the case, as well as making sure all the cats have their own access to food, water, litter, bedding, etc.

If there is a change in her routine than it could be causing some stress and her change in behavior. If it continues, she should be examined by your vet to make sure there is not a medical reason. As cats age, they can develop dental disease, kidney/liver issues, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, etc. and your vet can do an examination and run lab-work to make sure she is healthy.
