My dog has recurring health issues. Is there an underlying condition?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | neutered | 5 years and 2 months old | 55 lbs

My dog has a number of recurring health issues: Urinary infections and incontinence, dermatitis and skin infections, abscess on one paw, stomach issues, vomiting, low immune system (always has something wrong). He's been on a number of antibiotics & steroids. Our vet doesn't think the issues are related but I'm worried he may have an underlying health issue. Any ideas? I recently changed his food and saw some improvement in his skin issues (licking and biting himself).

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There are a few possibilities that come to mind with what you are describing. Endocrine disorders such as diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, and hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing's) are some of the first places I would start. Under-devoloped or suppressed immunity can be some rare things such as bone marrow hypoplasia or a deficiency in specific cell signalling chemicals produced by the body or receptors for those chemicals. I would consider consulting with a specialist. If Hero's primary problem is with his skin, a dermatologist would be the one to see. If other infections are more prevalent, consider seeing an internist. Hope this helps!
