Why is my dog's diarrhea not improving after doggy care or boarding?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Female | spayed | 1 year and 3 months old | 20 lbs

We have picked up Lemon one week ago from a 11 day stint with her doggy care. She didn’t seem to have taken it very well but has recovered all well besides the point that she’s still having diarrhea and it’s not getting better at all. What could it be?

Diarrhea can have many different causes, but given that she had exposure to a lot of dogs, it's likely related to an intestinal infection. It's a good sign if she is eating and drinking well. Diarrhea is a common problem that is usually self-limiting (will go away on its own). If Lemon has any of the following, then she should see a vet: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Starts acting very depressed 4) Stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. 5) Diarrhea lasts longer than three days. You can help her get through this by feeding bland food (boneless chicken and rice is good). Feed small portions (1/4 cup or less) three times a day. You can also add probiotics to the food (can get this at the pet store), which has demonstrated some efficacy for improving diarrhea. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available. For more information about diarrhea in dogs, I recommend you read the short article at the following link: https://www.petcoach.co/article/most-common-causes-of-diarrhea-in-dogs/ I hope this helps and Lemon gets better soon.
