My new dog has no vaccine records. How many shots and what's the cost?

my dads friend gave me their yorkie because they couldn't take care of him anymore, and i never checked if he had his vaccinations, how many shots would he need if he has none and how much would it be?

Great question! Toro will need his DHPPi vaccine (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, and parainfluenza) as well as rabies. For both of these, he will need an initial vaccine of both, then a booster of each four weeks later to incur immunity. Depending on the prevalence of leptospirosis in your area and if you are ever planning on boarding him, he may need a lepto vaccine and kennel cough vaccine. You can speak to your vet about if those vaccines, but he should definitely get DHPPi and rabies. There may be a low cost vaccine clinic in your area, which can offer vaccines for as low as $20. I would call local clinics to get prices for his vaccines. Good on you for taking him in and getting those done!

Most puppies will require a series of shots spaced out 3-4 weeks apart, usually a combo vaccine such as DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza). Lots of questions! By the way, Otis is so very cute. So I can say many vets do not recognize given by owners. This is because they often give them wrong, and/or the store where they got it stored the vaccine incorrectly leading to the vaccine being useless. Frankly, I would not count that vaccine, and start the series from the beginning. He needs the DHPPi combination vaccine, three shots each given four weeks apart. He can get that now, and the vet will schedule with you the next booster. He will be old enough for his first rabies vaccine at 12 weeks of age, and two vaccines will need to be given four weeks apart to incur immunity. Congrats on the new dog! She should be seen by a vet for a wellness exam, and will definitely need her distemper/parvovirus combo vaccine (Dhpp) and her rabies vaccine. I also recommend a heartworm test and fecal test to check for parasites, and get her started on both heartworm prevention and a good flea&tick prevention. There are a number of other vaccines that your vet can discuss with you, that we'll give according to what's in the region and what Sosa might get exposed to. As far as cost, that varies by region and vet clinic but you can ask your vet for an estimate on anything they recommend. Hope this helps.

Boi will need his DHPPi (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza) combination vaccine as well as rabies (it's required by law in Florida). She is a pretty girl!!! The most important vaccination (and one required by law) is the Rabies vaccine. This is essential. The second most important vaccine is the Distemper vaccine, which is often a combo vaccine sometimes called a DHPP (protects against distemper, canine hepatitis, parvovirus and parainfluenza). These vaccines are considered the "core vaccines" for dogs. Every dog should have them. The rest will depend on her lifestyle. I also recommend the Leptosporosis vaccine for dogs if they spend time outdoors in areas with creeks/puddles/ponds because this disease is a bacteria transmitted to dogs by contaminated water (rodents who have the disease urinate and it contaminates the water and the dogs can acquire it this way). The Lepto vaccine requries a series of 2 booster 3 to 4 weeks apart if she has never had it before. Other vaccines you may consider would include Lyme if your dog is outdoors and exposed to ticks and you are in a lyme endemic area, Bordetella also kn

Hi, I just got a puppy a few days ago, I wanted to get his shots and maybe anything else he would need to make sure his healthy! Do you know what I would need to get besides the shots and how much would all of it be?
Congrats on a new puppy! Some vaccines are based on lifestyle and your region. Your vet will consult with you and recommend vaccines based on lifestyle. Core vaccines are DHP/PV (distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza and parvo. This must be boostered every 3 weeks until 14-16 weeks old. Rabies is given once a year at 12 weeks or older. Bordatella is usually given once every 6-12 months. Optional vaccines are leptospirosis which is a fatal bacterial infection that can cause kidney and liver failure and is spread by wildlife. I see this in my area and strongly recommend it, it can also infect people! Lymes vaccine is optional and important in areas where this disease is prevalent. Canine influenza vaccine is also important if you live in areas with outbreaks or travel with your pet, or go to doggie daycare. Fecals and deworming is important and is usually done during vaccines. We acquired Onyx from an older senile woman. We have no idea what her vaccination record is, although we were told she is up to date, and our vet does not do titer tests. She is approximately 8 months old. We have doubts she was vaccinated properly.
Congratulations on your new dog! If the vaccine history is uncertain, I would recommend starting the vaccine series as though she had not had any vaccines, which would involve a rabies vaccine, and then 2 rounds 3 to 4 weeks apart of the DHPP vaccine. Depending on your dog's lifestyle and where you live, I would also consider the leptosporosis vaccine and the bordetella vaccine. Your vet can discuss these options and your lifestyle with you and help you to decide what vaccines to choose.

Hi, I just got a dog that will be 5 in September. I got no medical paperwork but the past owners told me that they weren't able to get his shots the past 2-3 years. What shots do I need to get him?
Your dog will need several vaccines. Most veterinarians give a yearly combo vaccine that includes distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza, and Corona (DHPPC). He will also need his Rabies vaccine. Rabies can now be given every three years after the initial 1 year vaccine. Other vaccines that I recommend are Canine Bordetella vacine (kennel cough) that is given every 6 or 12 months, and a Leptospirosis vaccine (this vaccine can be added to the combo vaccine or given alone). If your veterinarian offers a Lymes disease vaccine (probably means lymes is prevelant in your area), it would be a good idea to get that one as well. I also recommend getting your dog tested for heartworm disease and putting him on a monthly heartworm pill. Best of luck to you and your new dog and thank you for using pet coach.

Congratulations on adopting Rico! Since he has not yet had vaccines, you can start from square one. Rico should be examined by a veterinarian to evaluate his overall health and can then begin his vaccine series. He will need two DAPP (distemper-adenovirus-parvovirus-parainfluenza) vaccines spaced 3-4 weeks apart, as well as a rabies vaccine. In most areas of the country, it is often recommended to being a series of leptospirosis vaccines as well. In Lyme disease endemic areas, Lyme vaccines are often given. If Rico will be going to kennels, doggy daycare or dog parks, you can also discuss canine influenza and bordetella (kennel cough) vaccines with his vet.

Vaccine recommendations to partially depend upon his lifestyle and where you live. Also, that second vaccine should have been given in a 2 to 4 week window from the initial vaccine. If it was given later than four weeks after the first vaccine, he will need booster vaccines within a 2 to 4 week window. Assuming he was given the vaccines at the appropriate time, Kai should get another DHLPP and a rabies vaccine. If he gets groomed, goes to the park or has contact with other dogs in general, you may consider getting a kennel cough vaccine. Other vaccines are for Lyme disease and Influenza (dog flu). Your local veterinarian can discuss if these diseases are present in your area and what potential risk factors exist. You may be able to find lower cost vaccinations at a low-cost vaccine clinic or a vaccine clinic in general. You can generally find information online.
