My dog has a cut and is limping. Does he need immediate vet care?

My dog has a small cut on his shoulder/ upper front leg he just got today. He recently started occasionally limping. Should I be worried? Does he need immediate attention?

Did the limping start today? I wonder if Pawl injured a muscle when he got hurt. It sounds like if the limping is intermittent that it might be ok to wait a short while, but I always worry about fractures and if delaying the exam would cause delayed healing as well. However, many soft tissue injuries will heal in their own with a few weeks of strict rear and possibly anti inflammatory medications if he needs them. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian, but as long as the limping is improving then you may be able to wait until next week. As far as the scratch goes, keep it clean and keep her from Licking it. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

    Hello! That looks like a pretty minor cut, so I think you're safe to keep an eye on it for now. Clean it 1-2 times per day with a warm water washcloth or saline- no need for soaps, ointments, or bandages. I would try to limit his activity over the next few days so that he doesn't open it up any more than it already is. Another thing- don't let him lick it! Many dogs go overboard when they have a tiny cut and make it worse. There are different cone options available at pet stores if you need to get one for him. If it begins to swell, ooze, or become painful then it's time to go to the vet to get any infection under control. I hope this is helpful! If the limping seems to be worsening, I would rather have you take her to a veterinarian to be examined rather than wait any longer. If she has an infection deeper in the wound, you won't be able to reach it with topical disinfectants. She should probably be on an oral antibiotic and pain medication to help reduce any inflammation. I hope this helps! I’ve come home from work to find my dog limping on her front leg, she’s bearing weight on it but limps when she walks but was fine on her morning walks ?
It certainly isn’t wrong to have her looked at right away to make sure there is no fracture or infection or something that needs to be dealt with ASAP. However, resting for a day to see if she improves a bit and then having her seen is appropriate as well. Regardless, I would keep her confined to a small area or room so she doesn’t damage it more. Walking dog suddenly started limping
Of your dog has started to suddenly limp on a hind leg it is likely that he damaged his knee or a cruciate ligament. But it could also be a sprain or an injury. Check the affected leg starting by inspecting the paw inbetween the toes and pads for a foreign body lodged in it or an injury. Then check every toe muscle and bone moving up the leg to the hip. THis should tell you where it hurts. He needs to rest and only leash walk to do his business. If you find a wound that appears infected or you pulled a thorn or similar out of the paw, you can bathe it in a warm epsom salt solution several times a day which should keep your dog comfortable until you can see a veterinarian. If you find other areas hurting and your dog is in pain you may want to see a vet tonight for an exam and pain medicine. If he does not appear too painful you can wait until Monday to see a vet.

Terrier has been lame on front leg for almost 2 days now. No sign of any cut or puncture wound. Initially she looked sore from the shoulder (due to her gait and posture) but now she seems to be worried more about her paw. She could be slightly swolle
She could have an incomplete fracture or some kind of soft tissue injury, like a sprain or strain. Since she has been lame without improvement for a couple of days, I recommend getting her seen by your vet for x-rays and an exam. Until then I recommend confining her to a crate of a small room to keep her as quiet and immobile as possible, to minimize further damage and/or allow it to heal. Treatment will depend on your vet's findings.

I think giving her 24-48 hours to see if she recovers is fine since she's not limping all the time. You can also soak the foot with the redness in an epsom salt bath for 5 minutes twice a day to help heal the skin. If she's still limping Monday/Tuesday, I would schedule a vet visit for an exam, possibly x-rays, and pain medications.

Poor Layla! If she is still limping I would make an appointment to have her seen by your vet. She may have injured her nail(s) as you described, or she may even have some soft tissue swelling/ irritation or a fracture. If there is a stick/ splinter/ other foreign object in her paw the vet can help remove it and treat it to help prevent infection. Pain medications meant for humans can be very dangerous (and even deadly) for dogs, so I do not recommend giving any to Layla without consulting with your vet. I recommend keeping her in a crate or in a room where she can't run/ jump on anything and only taking her out for very short bathroom breaks until she is no longer limping. Make sure she's on a leash so she can't run and make things worse.

If xrays have not been taken of the affected leg, I would certainly recommend doing this to rule out a bone fracture as this could be the cause of the limp. The bones may be absolutely fine and this may just be soft tissue trauma / bruising that is causing the limp. She should receive an anti inflammatory for the pain and rest her in her cage for at least 14-21 days to restrict activity and promote healing of the injured leg. Limping itself can be an indication of pain, as dogs do not usually avoid putting weight on one of their legs for no reason, so please make an appointment to have Ptolemy seen by a veterinarian. Causes of the limping could be trauma, a muscular or nerve injury, a fractured bone, an injured or overgrown toenail, a tumour/mass, or a foreign body embedded in the paw or leg. Some infectious diseases such as Lyme disease and joint diseases such as arthritis or joint infection can cause limping as well. If the limping becomes worse, I recommend seeing a vet right away, either at another clinic or at an emergency hospital. If not, and if Ptolemy is otherwise comfortable (eating, drinking, peeing, pooping normally, normal activity levels) then you can make an appointment to have Ptolemy seen by your regular vet when they are available. I don't think you need to carry her. She can walk but just slowly and only on a leash. It is amazing how quickly they "forget" they are injured when they see a squirrel or something! I recommend you rest her (obviously no running, jumping or playing) over the weekend. If by Monday there is no improvement then she should probably see the vet. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
