My dog has crusty scabs. Is it an emergency? What can I do now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 7 years and 6 months old | 8.6 lbs

My dog has large crusty scabs on his back and areas that have been under his sweater. I cleaned them with diluted apple cider vinegar and am putting coconut oil on them until he can be seen by a vet. Is there anything else I should do? Obviously it needs to be treated quickly but does he need to be taken to am emergency clinic?

Hello and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. While I don't think this is an emergency, I would get Nemo in to see a veterinarian as soon as you can. I strongly suspect that there is an infection in his skin and he is probably very uncomfortable. Until you can take him to the vet I would clean the area with an antiseptic solution such as dilute betadine (to the color of weak tea) or hibiclens. Both of these should be available at your local drug store. Then dry it well and apply a thin layer of topical triple antibiotic ointment. Do this twice daily. I hope that Nemo feels better soon!
